Sixty of the top young table tennis talents in Scotland have entered for the Royal Dynasty table tennis championships at Meadowmill Sports Centre (Tranent) on Sunday. In the under-21 event, Colin Dalgleish (Edinburgh) is the top seed, with Alex Wheeler (Falkirk)-fresh from victory in the ‘Band 2’ event at the West of Scotland Open-likely to be his main threat. Rachel Crawford (Falkirk) and Bethany Payne (Perth) will be players to watch in the Junior girls event. The Junior boys may well feature another clash between Murrayfield teammates (and top seeds) Colin Dalgleish and Christopher Wheeler (Falkirk). Wheeler came out on at the Edinburgh Championships, while Dalgleish won when they played last week at the West of Scotland Open. 12 year old Wheeler is also the top seed for the highly competitive cadet boys category, where he will face competition from Alisdair Rennet (Dundee), Jason Fleming (Perth), Karl Frey (Perth), and John Hannah (Edinburgh). Calum Morrison (Edinburgh) will hope to continue his fine season in the Minor boys category. [C. Ellis] Premier division event A high quality field and the fact that only group winners got through led to a number of tight group games. Group 1: Chris Wheeler overcame his two experienced opponents (Martin Mackay and Geoff Hunter) 3-0 and 3-1. Geoff beat Martin 3-0. Group 2: Colin Dalgleish dominated the 4-man group, losing just one set in matches against Colin Green, Eddie Scott (who had beaten Colin in the league) and Ian Johnson. Colin Green secured 2nd place with a comeback 3-2 victory against Eddie Scott. Group 3 was the tightest with defending champion Willie Mabon battling back from 1-2 down to beat Ying Jin. Ying himself them completed a fine comeback to beat Alex Wheeler 3-2. This all meant that the final match (Alex vs Willie) would be decisive. Alex took the 1st two with some ease (11-6, 11-4) before Willie fought back in the 3rd 12-10. The 4th was a nail-biter, with Willie saving 4 match points with some fine BHs before Alex finally took it 17-15. Group 4 was determined by a very close match between Stewart Armitage and Blair Fowler. The match featured several top-class rallies with Stewart’s sweeping FH and Blair’s BH to the fore. Some service faults at key moments by Blair assisted Stewart in taking it 3-2 (-5, 8, 9, -3, 4). Rita Prajapati was 3rd; Charlie Ellis 4th. Semi-Finals. 1. C. Wheeler vs S. Armitage. Stewart started strongly taking the 1st game 11-4 before Chris found his best form to take the match 3-1 with some fine play (-4, 7, 9, 8). 2. C. Dalgleish vs Alex Wheeler. Colin controlled the match taking it 3-0 (7, 6, 4). Final. Chris’s high level of consistency helped him take command of the match with the 1st two games (11-7, 11-2) before Colin’s heavy topspins helped him take the 3rd13-11. Though neither player produced their best form in the final, it looked as if it might go the distance before Chris took a healthy lead in the 4th. There was drama towards the end at 9-6 as Colin suffered a ankle injury mid-point. After 10 mins medical attention he bravely saved a match point before Chris closed it out. It would be good if people can maybe arrive in the hall about 15 minutes before the times shown above, so that we can start promptly. There has been a decent entry so there is little spare time in the scheduling. Entry forms available online shortly Penicuik Amendments 09/12/2011
